# Check-ins and follow-ups

> How Abbie reaches out between conversations, and why.

Abbie doesn't only speak when spoken to. With your permission, she'll start a conversation herself in two situations.

## Check-ins

If it's been a while since you last spoke, Abbie may send a simple check-in: a "how's it going" to reopen the conversation. She only does this if you've interacted with her before; if you've never spoken to her, she won't chase you out of nowhere.

## Follow-ups

If a backlog item is sitting in **Waiting on you** and nobody's answered for a while, Abbie will follow up on it rather than letting it stall silently. This is the same mechanism that surfaces parked items in the ["Abbie needs you" card](/abbie/getting-started/abbie-home): a follow-up message is simply that same nudge, sent to you directly.

## You're always in control

Both of these can be turned off entirely, or tuned to how often they happen. See [Cadence and quiet hours](/abbie/proactive/cadence-and-quiet-hours). Turning proactive messages off doesn't change anything about how Abbie answers when you talk to her first; it only stops her from starting the conversation.
