# Your first conversation

> What happens the first time you talk to Abbie, and how to get the most out of the first few messages.

  <Step title="Open the chat">
    From the Abbie home page, select **Chat with Abbie**. This starts a new session; Abbie doesn't need any setup before you can talk to her.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Just talk to her">
    Write the way you would to a colleague. Ask a question, ask her to draft something, or describe something you'd like done. There's no special syntax and no command list to learn.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Watch her work">
    While she's replying, a row of stages appears above her answer: understanding the request, pulling in context, drafting, checking the draft. This is normal and it's worth a look the first time; see [Watching her think](/abbie/chatting/watching-her-think).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tell her about yourself">
    If you mention your role, how you like answers formatted, or a preference, Abbie notices and starts adapting to it. You can also set some of this directly; see [Rapport](/abbie/teaching/rapport).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Hand her something to keep working on">
    If you ask for something that takes more than one reply, Abbie can keep it as an open item and come back to it, including after you've left the conversation. See [Abbie's backlog](/abbie/backlog/how-abbie-tracks-work).

## What to expect

    Facts she learns get carried forward as memory, and any open task stays on her backlog until it's done. The conversation itself is also saved; you can find it again from the session sidebar. See [Sessions and history](/abbie/chatting/sessions-and-history).

  <Accordion title="What if she needs permission to do something?">
    If a request needs access to an integration, or needs you to confirm before she acts, she'll show a card in the chat asking. Nothing happens without that answer. See [Decisions and authorisations](/abbie/chatting/decisions-and-authorisations).

  <Accordion title="What if I want her to stop?">
    There's a stop control on any run that's in progress. See [Stopping a run](/abbie/chatting/stopping-a-run).
